How to Choose an NDIS Provider: 10 Questions to Ask

Your NDIS plan gives you choice and control over who supports you. That is a great thing, but with so many providers out there, it can be hard to know where to start. The right provider will get to know you, respect your choices and help you work towards your goals. The wrong fit can leave you feeling unheard.
This guide covers 10 questions to ask when choosing an NDIS provider, so you can compare your options with confidence.
Before you start: know what you need
It helps to be clear on a few things before you contact providers:
Which supports you need, such as daily living help, supported independent living (SIL), community access or respite
How your plan is managed: NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed
Your goals, and what a good day looks like for you
Practical needs, such as location, times of day, language or cultural preferences
How your plan is managed matters. If your plan is NDIA-managed, you must use registered NDIS providers. If it is plan-managed or self-managed, you can usually use registered or unregistered providers. Some supports must always be delivered by a registered provider: from 1 July 2026, this includes Supported Independent Living.
10 questions to ask an NDIS provider
1. Are you a registered NDIS provider?
Registered providers have been approved by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and must meet the NDIS Practice Standards. You can check a provider's registration using the Commission's Find a registered provider tool. All providers, registered or not, must follow the NDIS Code of Conduct.
2. Do you have experience supporting people like me?
Ask about their experience with your type of disability, your support needs and your age group. A good provider will be honest about what they can and can't do.
3. How will you get to know me?
Look for a provider who wants to understand your goals, routines, preferences and the people who matter to you, not just your plan budget.
4. How do you choose and match support workers?
Ask how they recruit and screen workers, what training they provide, and how they match workers to you. Can you meet a worker before they start? Can you ask for a different worker if it isn't a good fit?
5. Will I have consistent support workers?
Seeing the same faces builds trust and makes support easier. Ask how they keep the same workers with you and what happens when someone is sick or on leave.
6. Do you cover my area, and when are you available?
Check they can support you where you live and at the times you need, including evenings, weekends or overnight if that matters to you.
7. What will it cost, and how do you invoice?
Ask for a clear quote. Find out how they charge for travel, cancellations and public holidays, and check their prices are within the NDIS price limits.
8. What will be in my service agreement?
A service agreement sets out what supports you will receive, the cost, and how either of you can end or change the agreement. Read it carefully and ask questions before you sign. You can ask a family member, support coordinator or advocate to look over it with you.
9. How will you involve me in decisions?
You should be at the centre of every decision about your support. Ask how they communicate with you and your family, how often they check in, and how they support you to make your own choices.
10. How do you handle feedback and complaints?
A good provider welcomes feedback and has a clear, simple complaints process. If you can't resolve a concern with your provider, you can also contact the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
Signs of a good provider
They listen more than they talk
They answer your questions clearly, without pressure to sign up
They are open about costs and registration
They respect your culture, values and way of life
They focus on your goals and independence, not just tasks
What if a provider isn't working out?
You can change providers. Check your service agreement for the notice period, let your provider know, and talk with your support coordinator or LAC if you need help finding someone new. You don't need to stay with a provider that isn't right for you.
